Fun Friday Project Overview
In this 60-minute class project, your group will design a new cover for S.E. Hinton's novel "The Outsiders." Your goal is to reflect the themes, characters, and emotions of the story to current - through your design.
Objectives
- Understand key themes and characters from "The Outsiders."
- Collaborate effectively to brainstorm and create a design.
- Use artistic skills and creativity to develop a visually appealing cover.
- Present your design and explain your choices.
Project Steps
Quick Review of the Novel (10 minutes)
- Discuss the main themes: friendship, social class struggles, identity, and loyalty.
- Identify key characters (e.g., Ponyboy, Johnny, Dally, Darry).
Brainstorm Design Ideas (15 minutes)
- In small groups, brainstorm ideas for your new cover.
- Consider imagery, color schemes, and font styles that represent the novel.
- Quickly sketch rough ideas on paper.
Create a Rough Draft (20 minutes)
- Choose the best idea and create a rough draft of the cover.
- Use available materials (markers, colored pencils, or paper).
- Make sure to include:
- Title: "The Outsiders"
- Author: S.E. Hinton
- Group name (optional).
Final Touches (5 minutes)
- Add details and color to finalize your design.
Group Presentations (10 minutes)
- Each group presents their cover design (1-2 minutes each).
- Explain your design choices and how they reflect the themes and characters of the novel.
- Allow a minute for questions and feedback.
