Group Work - Timeline Creation - Chapter 1-9 Outsiders (to work on further as we move through the book to Chapter 12).

Objective:

By the end of the lesson, students will:

  1. Understand the main events of Chapters 1-9 of The Outsiders.
  2. Create a visual timeline in first person, reflecting the events through Ponyboy’s perspective.
  3. Use first-person narration to summarize the plot and character motivations.
  4. Work collaboratively with a partner to complete the project and share ideas.

Materials Needed:

  • Paper and markers
  • Copies of The Outsiders (Chapters 1-9)
  • Lined paper
  • Markers (optional for brainstorming)

Instructions for the Project:

  1. Group:
    • Divide students into pairs. Each pair will be responsible for creating a timeline based on the events in Chapters 1-9 of The Outsiders.
    • Explain that they will be writing the timeline in first person as if they were Ponyboy Curtis. The goal is for them to summarize key events of the story and reflect on how Ponyboy feels during those events.

Timeline Project Outline:

In your timeline, you will focus on major events from Chapters 1-9 of The Outsiders. As you write, think about Ponyboy’s perspective—what is he feeling and thinking during each event? Use his voice and tone to make the timeline come alive.

Sample: Key Events to Include:

  1. Chapter 1: Introduction to Ponyboy & the Greasers

    • Event: I introduce myself, Ponyboy Curtis, and my brothers, Darry and Sodapop. I talk about our lives as Greasers and our ongoing rivalry with the Socs. I tell you how I feel about being a Greaser, and about the way people judge me based on my appearance.
    • First-Person Writing: “I’ve always been a Greaser. That’s how people see me—one of those hoodlums with greasy hair and torn-up jeans. But I’m not just that. I’m Ponyboy, and I’m different. I like books and movies, and sometimes I feel like I don’t quite fit in with my own gang.”
